Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited reimagining of Frankenstein finally comes to life this autumn. Audiences can first experience the film on the big screen when it opens in select cinemas on October 17, before it makes its global streaming debut on Netflix, November 7.
Inspired by Mary Shelley’s 1818 classic, del Toro’s version stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant yet tormented scientist who creates life — only to recoil in horror at what he has unleashed. Jacob Elordi, a BAFTA nominee, takes on the role of the Creature, a being born of ambition but treated as an abomination.
For del Toro, who both wrote and directed the film, the Creature is far more than just a monster. He has described him as his “patron saint,” a figure that has fascinated him since his childhood in Mexico. It’s a relationship that shapes the heart of the film, exploring not only horror but also profound questions of existence, humanity, and compassion.
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 30, where it received strong praise from critics, many noting its blend of gothic grandeur and emotional depth.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, del Toro explained his lifelong fascination with Shelley’s story: “Mary Shelley’s masterpiece is rife with questions that burn brightly in my soul: existential, tender, savage, doomed questions that only burn in a young mind and only adults and institutions believe they can answer. For me, only monsters hold the secrets I long for.”
With its celebrated cast, del Toro’s signature vision, and the enduring power of Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein looks set to be both a cinematic spectacle and one of Netflix’s most anticipated releases of the year.
