Universal Studios UK officially announced
The UK is finally getting a Universal Studios theme-park, it was announced today.
Universal Destinations & Experiences, a division of Comcast Corporation, will lead the design and delivery of a major new resort in the UK. The proposal—pending planning approval—includes a cutting-edge theme park made up of several immersive lands, packed with Universal’s signature thrilling rides, innovative attractions, and dynamic entertainment offerings. The development also includes a 500-room hotel and a vibrant retail, dining, and entertainment district.
Strategically located just south of Bedford and only 35 minutes by train from London, the park will become a new jewel in Universal’s global portfolio, which currently spans the United States and Asia-Pacific.
“This is a special and historic milestone for our company as we continue accelerating the growth of our theme park business and bringing joy to audiences around the world.”
— Mike Cavanagh, President, Comcast Corporation
Cavanagh emphasized the synergy between Universal’s storytelling and technology and the UK’s renowned creative and tourism sectors.
In addition to the UK expansion, Universal is actively growing across the United States. In May, the company will open Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida—its largest and most advanced theme park to date, and the first new major park in Florida in 25 years. This single project is expected to generate $11 billion in nationwide economic impact and create tens of thousands of jobs.
Further U.S. expansions include:
- Universal Horror Unleashed – a year-round horror experience opening in Las Vegas in late 2025.
- Universal Kids Resort – the first Universal theme park designed specifically for young families, opening in Frisco, Texas in 2026.
From 2018 to 2024, Comcast NBCUniversal has invested over $10 billion in new and existing Universal destinations across California, Florida, Texas, and Nevada.
“Bringing the Universal brand to the UK is an exciting step forward in driving future growth,”
— Mark Woodbury, Chairman & CEO, Universal Destinations & Experiences
The 476-acre site in Bedford, acquired in 2023, is exceptionally well connected—over 80% of England’s population and half of the UK’s are within a two-hour journey. Its location also offers easy access to mainland Europe, positioning the resort to become one of the continent’s most visited attractions.
Universal will submit a formal planning proposal to the UK Government in the coming months, with construction anticipated to begin in 2026, following a comprehensive period of research and due diligence.
“Expanding into Europe gives us a tremendous opportunity to engage new audiences and share the unforgettable experiences our teams create.”
— Mark Woodbury, Universal Destinations & Experiences
