Apple TV+ has officially renewed its critically acclaimed comedy series Trying for a fifth season. The heartfelt and humorous series stars BAFTA Award nominee Esther Smith and SAG Award nominee Rafe Spall, who return as Nikki and Jason—an endearing couple navigating the ups and downs of parenthood and adoption.
Season five picks up with Nikki and Jason facing unexpected challenges as Kat (played by Charlotte Riley), the biological mother of Princess and Tyler, suddenly re-enters the picture. Her arrival throws their once-settled family life into emotional disarray, forcing the couple to confront difficult decisions and shifting dynamics.
Since its global premiere, Trying has earned widespread praise as a “feel-good,” “poignant,” and “addictive” series, with Rotten Tomatoes awarding it an impressive 95% critics' score. Viewers and critics alike have celebrated its "standout performances," rich emotional depth, and refreshing take on modern family life, calling it “one of Apple TV+’s sweetest treats.”
The ensemble cast also features BAFTA Award winner Darren Boyd as Scott, Sian Brooke as Karen, Scarlett Rayner as Princess, and Cooper Turner as Tyler, each adding heart and humor to the show's vibrant world.
Trying is the creation of Andy Wolton, who serves as writer and executive producer. The series is executive produced by Josh Cole and Sam Pinell, both BAFTA nominees, alongside Chris Sussman, and is produced by BBC Studios.
Seasons one through four of Trying are now available to stream on Apple TV+, with Rafe Spall also set to appear in the upcoming Apple TV+ drama Smoke.
