Sky Sports supersizes Barclays Women’s Super League coverage for new season
Sky Sports will give fans of the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) unprecedented access to the league’s biggest names and live action when the new season begins this Friday, as defending champions Chelsea take on Manchester City.
This season, 90% of all WSL fixtures will be shown live on Sky Sports and NOW, providing more opportunities than ever before for supporters to follow their favourite players and clubs. Across the campaign, 118 matches will be broadcast, with every Sunday midday fixture forming part of a new flagship programme that brings all games from that timeslot together.
Coverage each Sunday begins at 11:00 with a full hour of build-up, including news, updates and features from every stadium, along with player-focused content. Presented from a brand-new studio, the programme will combine expert analysis, lively debate and interaction with the social conversation, creating a fresh destination for WSL fans each weekend.
Joining the broadcast team this year is former Aston Villa and Scotland captain Rachel Corsie, who will offer insight from her recent playing career. She is joined by new social reporters and women’s football superfans Rhyanna Parara and Alex Bailess, who will spotlight the biggest online talking points. They line up alongside Izzy Christiansen, presenter Caroline Barker and new lead commentator Ellen Ellard.
The opening weekend features four live matches, including the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton. Brighton & Hove Albion meet Aston Villa, Manchester United face Leicester City, and Tottenham Hotspur host London rivals West Ham United. Fans will also be able to keep track of all the action at once with Sky Sports’ new Multiview service, which covers every goal and key moment from across all matches with a dedicated commentary team and half-time analysis. Multiview will later be introduced to Premier League coverage.
Sky Sports is also expanding its women’s football content beyond live matches. A new WSL YouTube channel will feature highlights of every goal, selected live streams, exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes content. The Sky Sports app will make it easier to follow the league on the go, with vertical video highlights, live stats and match centres available to all users, while Sky customers can also stream live games. In addition, the WSL podcast From Pitch to Pod returns, hosted by Jordan Nobbs and Nikita Parris.
The expanded coverage comes under a new five-year rights agreement, delivering three times more live fixtures than ever before. This includes 78 games exclusive to Sky Sports, with up to five matches available each week and full coverage of the final round of fixtures.
The WSL expansion coincides with Sky’s record-breaking Premier League deal, which guarantees at least 215 live matches each season. Combined with more than 1,000 EFL games, plus coverage of the SPFL and SWPL, Sky Sports continues to be the leading home of domestic football.
