This year marks 75 years since the landmark National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949, which made vast areas of the British countryside accessible to all. To celebrate, Sammi Kinghorn and Matt Baker explore the first national park established under this act—the Peak District.
Sammi delves into the legacy of Ethel Haythornthwaite, a dedicated advocate for preserving the countryside, whose efforts were pivotal in safeguarding the Peak District. She also visits a local bootmaker to discover the traditional techniques still used to craft sturdy working boots.
Meanwhile, Matt joins the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation to learn about the dangers of exploring wild landscapes and the life-saving work the group has carried out over 60 years. The program also introduces a farmer committed to protecting the curlew on his land.
Looking ahead, Tom investigates the challenges facing Britain’s 15 national parks, while Adam uncovers the history of the turkey and how it became the star of our Christmas celebrations.
