The BBC has announced that filming is underway on the third instalment of SAS Rogue Heroes, with a mix of returning cast members and fresh recruits joining the acclaimed wartime drama. Created by Steven Knight and produced by Kudos (a Banijay UK company) in collaboration with MGM+, the series now shifts its focus to one of the most pivotal stages of World War Two.
Adapted from Ben Macintyre’s bestselling book, the show offers a semi-fictionalised account of the formation of the legendary Special Forces unit. While showcasing daring missions, the drama also shines a light on the personal cost of conflict for those at the heart of the action.
Plot Details for Series Three
Set in the summer of 1944, the story follows Paddy Mayne and his unit as they parachute deep into occupied France. Their task is to strike at the German army from within, sabotaging defences and creating disruption as Allied forces advance. Working alongside the French Resistance and a wave of new recruits, the SAS face extraordinary dangers as the battle for Western Europe intensifies.
Returning Faces and New Additions
Jack O’Connell once again takes the lead as Paddy Mayne, joined by Sofia Boutella as intelligence operative Eve Mansour and Dominic West as officer Dudley Clarke.
The line-up also features familiar names including Theo Barklem-Biggs as Reg Seekings, Corin Silva as Jim Almonds, Jacob Ifan as Pat Riley, Jacob McCarthy as Johnny Cooper, Stuart Campbell as Bill Fraser, Bobby Schofield as Dave Kershaw and Jack Barton as John Tonkin.
New cast members include Lorne MacFadyen (Vigil, Starstruck) as Reverend Fraser McLusky, offering spiritual support to the troops. Nick Hargrove (Devotion, American Primeval), Andrew Dawson and Jake Jarratt also join as fresh recruits, fighting alongside the French and Belgian Maquis.
Behind the Scenes
Series creator Steven Knight outlined what’s ahead: “Series three picks up as the war enters a critical phase with the allies mobilising to liberate France. Way ahead of the advancing front line the SAS are doing what they do best, creating chaos and carnage among the defending axis troops. Never has the war been so bloody and never have the stakes been so high. The Rogue Heroes dare to win, but at what cost to themselves and their souls?”
Executive producer Karen Wilson, joint MD of Kudos, added: “It’s always incredibly exciting to be filming SAS Rogue Heroes, and we’re thrilled to be back for another series. I’m blown away by how Steven Knight takes the action to another level, with his scripts transporting us into the world of these remarkable characters, played by a remarkable ensemble of actors. If you thought series two was good, wait until you see what we have in store for series three.”
Nick Lambon, Commissioning Editor for the BBC, promised more edge-of-your-seat action: “We’ve been on the edge of our seats through two gripping campaigns with SAS Rogue Heroes, a third outing alongside the troops will be an equally explosive and action-packed instalment for BBC viewers. The cast and crew behind this drama have built a great team with true camaraderie, now they’re back together we can’t wait to see the results.”
