‘Adolescence’ has set a new tv ratings record in the UK, becoming the most watched show in the country last week.
It means it was watched more than any other programme on TV, beating the likes of Britain’s Got Talent, The Apprentice and Death in Paradise. It’s the first time a show on a streaming platform has ever topped the chart.
More than 6.4 million people watched the Netflix drama, according to official data from TV viewing figures company, BARB.
The second episode of Adolescence was watched by 5.94 million, putting it ahead of BBC One's The Apprentice and Death in Paradise which each attracted almost 5.8 million viewers each.
Incredibly, Adolescence's third episode was fifth in the weekly ratings with 5.14 million, while the fourth and final instament was seen by 4.65 million.
Those figures are expected to rise significantly this week, due to a the huge amount of news coverage Stephen Graham’s crime drama has received, and word of mouth - in particular amongst parents.
The show has sparked nationwide debate around the behaviour of young boys and their consumption of inappropriate material on social media.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told BBC Radio 5 Live in an interview broadcast on Monday: "There's a reason why the debate has suddenly sparked into life - a lot of people who work with young people at school or elsewhere, recognise that we may have a problem with boys and young men that we need to address."
Last week, The Version revealed Netflix want a follow-up series to tell a new story.
